KIDS BLOG

max on kids of the south blog

Hi, my name is Max, as you know. I’m 10 and I have a little sister. She can be very funny. And annoying. I also have a brilliant mother and an awesome brother and father. We just moved to Newtown last year and I’m just starting to get used to it; the busy streets, the sirens going up and down King St, the smell of the fresh dew on the leaves outside when we wake up at seven o’clock in the morning. I’m just kidding, we can’t really smell it.

I like to draw, look fancy, and make movies on the iPad. I like to draw Star Wars and I make my own comics. My favourite comic that I’ve made so far is Wormling about an evil inventor trying to build an armageddon device, but instead he makes a tiny worm than can eat anything. My favourite comic that I like to read is The Simpsons by Matt Groening, and Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi.

I like to look formal. I like to wear button-up shirts, my bow tie and a blazer. I also like hats, I’m not sure what the name of the hat that I like is called, it’s like a top hat but the top bit is smaller. My favourite casual outfit would be jeans and a plain t-shirt with a button-up shirt over the top with the sleeves rolled up.

I like to make stop-motion Lego movies. I also like to make movies with my family and friends in them. Usually I ask Rose my sister to star in them because I’m too busy doing the camera. I also edit them on iMovie. My favourite movie that I’ve made is probably Please, a movie about asking my mum and then my dad if I can eat watermelon. They keep telling me to ask the other parent until I break out into song and dance to Please, Please, Please by James Brown. My ultimate movie to make would be a Star Wars movie in the Star Wars saga.

I think something funny about me is that I can make weird noises (Dad thinks that’s funny).

Signing off for now — Max

You write so well Max! I loved the line about the dew and I loved getting to know you. Perhaps you will be a film-maker some day.

Let’s Hang Out

  • ‘everything in the world comes down to time in the end. happiness is a time you’re looking forward to, or time you look back on. it’s all about time passing.’
#annetyler

i was chatting with my grown-up son the other day and we were agreeing that right now, sometimes it feels like time has just... stopped. i have a lot of space to just be. sometimes i find myself reliving happy moments in my mind.

it’s interesting the things that come back to you. the clarity that perspective brings. the narrowing down, and the sifting through. what rises to the surface, when the noise falls away.

this one and her brother couldn’t be loving #stayhome life more. they’ve entertained each other and us (including writing, directing and performing a post-apocalyptic themed play), they’ve embraced having their dad and i take turns teaching them (they made up their own anthem for homeschool), and while they’ve spent more than their fair share of iso school hols on screens, basically,
during these strange and trying times, they’ve been, and are, a joy and a delight ✨
here i tried to take a portrait of rose and she turned the camera on me. because that’s what your children will do, right?
  • a couple of weeks ago i tried to fathom the current state of things as a whole. mistake. being newly single and separated from the little kids for part of the week adds another layer to things. this is just my deal right now. everyone has their own stuff going on. it’s a lot.
never have i ever spent so much time in public parks and gardens. i think we all have a greater appreciation of the world that isn’t human right now. the other day, apropos of nothing, rose said to me: i love nature. and i feel like humans just build things and wreck everything. they don’t care about nature unless it helps them.
max started telling her how she could help (regeneration programs) i started talking about voting.
but mostly i hugged her, and said yeah, that’s true. cause humans. sheesh.

comparatively speaking, we’re doing okay here. but i share this now, cause when i read of other’s struggles, for a moment i feel less alone. maybe hearing mine will do that for you too 🤍
