Let’s Hang Out

  • give me a child till she’s seven and i’ll... tell you ‘bout the fringe she cut herself without asking (that actually looks good), the artisan candle she wrecked by writing NO in permanent marker all over the label (cause she thought it smelt bad — it did), the tooth she lost in a pillow fight (and the other tooth she lost eating a red velvet cupcake). but most of all, i’d tell you ‘bout her magnificently kind heart, her beautifully determined spirit, and the knack she has for asking all the important questions 🌙#lastmonthofseven

  • part 4/4. the first time i clocked poverty i was eight years old, on my second visit to the philippines. we drove from the airport to my family’s home, passing children sleeping in cardboard boxes, high walls with broken glass shards lining the tops to keep people out. i felt sad and scared.
the second time was on a trip to san francisco when i was 11.
i didn’t see homelessness in the suburban town i grew up in, but standing on that city street with my family, i watched with an increasing sense of sorrow as a woman pushed a grocery cart filled with all her worldly possessions up that fancy city street.
i spent the rest of the day feeling irritable and unsettled. not being able to understand, not being able to unsee.
after i saw the woman, we went into a store on the opposite side of the street, and my family bought me a beautiful stone egg as a souvenir; smooth and marbled, it fit perfectly in the palm of my hand.

  • part 3/4. my earlier experiences of backpacking in asia (laos, vietnam and cambodia) when the kids were small, were not positive. my instinct to keep them safe overshadowed any real enjoyment i might have had. and if the younger ones had been with me, wandering the streets of india, i’d probs have felt the same way. but what i found was that alone, i was relaxed. i was relaxed about being peddled into oncoming traffic. i was relaxed about the high air pollution, not worried that my child’s asthma would be triggered.
i was not relaxed when children approached me for money, but i didn’t have to feel my own child’s heart break, as they looked into the eyes of a person their own age, hand outstretched, a baby astride their small hip. i didn’t have to hurriedly explain in real time how the world is a deeply unfair place.
alone, i could appreciate both the chaos and the beauty.
alone, only i had to face this. for now. 📷 near #commercialstreet #bangalore
