  • commissioned in 1638 by mughal emperor shah jahan, the #redfort lāl qila served as the residence for the imperial family until 1857, when the siege of delhi resulted in the british exiling the last mughal emperor to myanmar. • three days before i arrived in india i revisited my dna ancestry online and found that it had been updated to include indian heritage on my british side dating back to between the 1700-1800s. these results have a wide margin of error — it’s very possible that the next time i check, this heritage will have disappeared. there are so very few things we can know for sure. • being here and reading up on the history of india, the lives of the ruling families, britain’s interference in this (and almost every) part of the world, the rise and fall of empires... i just keep coming back to: humans. nothing much has changed. • when shah jahan’s first love, and second of three wives, empress mumtaz mahal died in her late thirties after giving birth to their 14th child, he built a tomb for her about three hours south of the red fort. today they call it the #tajmahal • 📷 of the red fort 2 11 19
