5 back-to-school bags

back-to-school-bags-2018

The kids are starting a new school this year, and getting a brand new school bag has been one of the small but necessary things I’ve been able to promise them.

I loved choosing my new school bag when I was a kid. I still remember how happy I was about the purple Fraggle Rock bag I had in fourth grade, and the canvas army store knapsack I drew all over in sixth grade. Did you have one of those? We drew checkerboard patterns on the straps.

Here’s our round-up of fun back-to-school bags that your kids might fancy too:

1. Mini Rodini Panda Backpack
Mini Rodini’s Panda backpack is made from recycled materials so it’s super cute as well as sustainable. Available from Yellow Dandy.

2. Kanken by Fjallraven
You’ve probably seen the Classic Kånken on the backs of stylish kids or hanging off a rainbow Eames hang-it-all on an impossibly gorgeous pic on Pinterest. The good news about these Swedish backpacks is that they’re hardy too, and made especially for the backs of small children. Available from Kanken – Fjallraven Australia.

3. Totoro Backpack
The kids can bring their Studio Ghibli crush to school with this cuddly plush Totoro bag. Available from Ikonic Pop.

4. Paper Wings Fawns Backpack
Their books and belongings will be carried in style with this spacious, doe-eyed backpack by Australian kids’ label Paperwings. Available in the last week of January from Lush Arena.

Let’s Hang Out

  • ‘everything in the world comes down to time in the end. happiness is a time you’re looking forward to, or time you look back on. it’s all about time passing.’
#annetyler

i was chatting with my grown-up son the other day and we were agreeing that right now, sometimes it feels like time has just... stopped. i have a lot of space to just be. sometimes i find myself reliving happy moments in my mind.

it’s interesting the things that come back to you. the clarity that perspective brings. the narrowing down, and the sifting through. what rises to the surface, when the noise falls away.

this one and her brother couldn’t be loving #stayhome life more. they’ve entertained each other and us (including writing, directing and performing a post-apocalyptic themed play), they’ve embraced having their dad and i take turns teaching them (they made up their own anthem for homeschool), and while they’ve spent more than their fair share of iso school hols on screens, basically,
during these strange and trying times, they’ve been, and are, a joy and a delight ✨
here i tried to take a portrait of rose and she turned the camera on me. because that’s what your children will do, right?
  • a couple of weeks ago i tried to fathom the current state of things as a whole. mistake. being newly single and separated from the little kids for part of the week adds another layer to things. this is just my deal right now. everyone has their own stuff going on. it’s a lot.
never have i ever spent so much time in public parks and gardens. i think we all have a greater appreciation of the world that isn’t human right now. the other day, apropos of nothing, rose said to me: i love nature. and i feel like humans just build things and wreck everything. they don’t care about nature unless it helps them.
max started telling her how she could help (regeneration programs) i started talking about voting.
but mostly i hugged her, and said yeah, that’s true. cause humans. sheesh.

comparatively speaking, we’re doing okay here. but i share this now, cause when i read of other’s struggles, for a moment i feel less alone. maybe hearing mine will do that for you too 🤍
